Key takeaways
- Your Google Business Profile is the most important local ranking asset
- Consistent business details across the web build trust
- Reviews, local pages and links separate winners from the rest
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Search for your business on Google and claim the listing, or create one if it doesn’t exist. Complete the verification process Google asks for. Without a verified profile you can’t appear in the local map results the way competitors do.
2. Choose the right categories and services
Pick the most specific primary category that describes your business, then add secondary categories that apply. Add every service you offer with a short description. Categories are one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear for.
3. Make your name, address and phone number consistent
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be identical on your website, your profile and every directory. Small differences, such as ‘Street’ versus ‘St.’, can create confusion about whether listings belong to the same business.
4. Set your service area correctly
If you travel to customers, list the cities you serve instead of publishing a home address you don’t want public. Keep the service area realistic. Listing dozens of cities you don’t serve doesn’t help and can look spammy.
5. Add real photos and update them
Upload clear photos of your team, work, storefront and results. Fresh, real images build trust with people comparing options and show that the business is active.
6. Build a steady review process
Ask every happy customer for a review shortly after the job, and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a professional tone. Review quantity, recency and quality all influence both rankings and conversions. Never buy or fake reviews.
7. Build citations on trusted directories
List your business on reputable general directories and industry-specific ones, and make sure each listing matches your NAP exactly. Bing Places is worth claiming because Bing data feeds other services, including some AI assistants.
8. Create a page for each service and city
A single ‘services’ page rarely ranks for everything. Give each core service its own page, and create local pages for the cities you serve with genuinely useful, specific content, not copy-pasted text with the city name swapped.
9. Add local business schema
Structured data tells search engines exactly who you are, what you do and where. Add LocalBusiness or a more specific type, including your name, address, phone, hours and service area, and keep it accurate.
10. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. Compress images, avoid heavy scripts, and test your pages on a real device. A slow site loses calls even if it ranks.
11. Earn local links and mentions
Links from local organizations, chambers of commerce, suppliers, sponsorships and local news signal that you are a real part of the community. A few relevant local links are worth more than many low-quality ones.
12. Track what matters
Track calls, form fills and direction requests, not just rankings. Review your Google Business Profile insights monthly, and note which pages and searches bring real enquiries.
